The Turbulence Around Dosing Trimethoprim

The ratio of trimethoprim and sulfomethoxazole is fixed one to five for all drug formulations. This as pharmacist makes our lives easier because we can focus on the dosing of one of the drug components, which will always follow proportionally. IV trim sulfa has to be diluted in D5W and every 80 milligrams of trimethobrim. At its most concentrated, this can be as much as 125 mils per 80 milligram tablet. Trimethoprim is very similar to potassium sparing diuretics in that it can block tubule sodium channels, which can lead to hyperkalemia or Westeno disease.
