The first amendment was put in place as a shield against tyranny. The idea of the market place of ideas, i think, was really a creation of john stuart mill who wrote in the 18 hundreds. It didn't enter the us Consiuta lexicon until the early 19 hundreds. And there is that quote from thnoomas jeerson apalosic, bread is better than none: "It's like we've reduced everything to nothing"
