How Much Does Noise Pollution Actually Limit What Animals Can Hear?

In noisy roadways, you see many fewer animals and many fewer species of animals adjacent to roads than you would in habitats that are further away. One research group created a phantom road through otherwise virgin forest by projecting road noise. In the study up in Idaho, they were able to show that not only did the numbers of birds visiting that area change, but those birds who did visit were much less successful at foraging than they would have been when the noise was off. And one listener asked why certain noises seem to physically hurt people or at least kind of make them cringe?
