The Emily of the Song by Roger Waters
Emily was apparently always a favourite name of Barrett, and he even talked with one girlfriend about the possibility of naming their first child Emily. The song also evokes very specific memories of Barrett's childhood. According to Roger Waters, the woods mentioned in the lyrics are meant to be woods in which they have played as children. On the road out of Cambridge towards the Gog and Magog Hills, the song was apparently seven minutes long in its earliest versions. It required a great deal of editing to get down to single length, but it was worth it as the track made the top ten. And that was where the problems started.
