Religion and Sex in the Mediterranean World
Ancient religions in the ancient mediterranean world wanted to distinguish between religion and sex. In a greek sanctuary, for example, you had to make sure that you had washed yourself if you'd had sex that morning. So it's not the case that ancient religions were very pro sects. If anything, they're worried about sects. And then the religion kind of falls away, and the ardry becomes an area of concern because of its sex, rather than because of its religious actions.
