Rousseau's Morality in the Modern World

Rousseau believes that prior to even those first steps into civilization, man was altogether gentler. He says we heightened our capacity for cruelty as a species over time by engaging in the dirty business of civilization. And so over time, the repeated suffering and violence is what makes mankind crueler still. In between those extremes we have this period that he says is the least prone to revolutions.
