In the 1950s, there's this new idea becomes popular. The default idea has been that people are terrible. We have original sin. And actually what happens is that when we're born society and culture puts all this stuff on top of us that stops us actualizing and being amazing. What we need to do is kind of rip away all those kind of layers of terribleness of the culture puts there and find the kind of perfect core within. It called the human potential movement or humanistic psychology. Carl Rogers is incredibly influential psychotherapist psychologist. He was one of the big pioneers of this idea.
