Mentorships can be cultivated from the top down and the bottom up. But there's another direction mentorship can flourish, it's sideways. The best conversations in my career have not been because like the CEO from on high has come to me or some senior person. It's often a peer of mine who will say, actually, I'm moving on from my job. Like, would you be interested in that? When employees are encouraged to be the architects of their own careers, companies win.

No one has a keener understanding of this issue than Bob Iger, executive chair and former CEO of the Walt Disney Company.
