The Tension and Contradiction of Essential Workers
The whole idea that certain workers, like afood delivery people or truck drivers are essential flies in the face of the idea that prevails in the business world. And it is remarkable that as the pandemic has abated, with the arrival of the vaccines, there's been a remarkably rapid return to the same people being spoken of as expendable, or even worthless. So this moralistic call upon workers to do their essential work then can quickly shift into a totally different moral language, that you have to work, not because your work is important, but because otherwise you're lazy, you've lost your worth.
