Woke has become a shorthand for dismissing or demonizing left wing or liberal politics. The term itself was originally taken up by african americans who had literally woken up to an understanding of how systemic raceism operated. It's from the same family as consciousness raising, which gained currency with second wave feminists. To day woke has appropriated as the 20 first century iteration of the now redundant term politically correct,. With a similar job description to condemn any one whose politics differed from a prevailing orthodoxy.
