The mass market romance novel industry that we think of to day didn't start heating up until the 19 fifties. Harlequin pulled out all the marketing stops to get american housewives reading romance. Second wave feminists in the sixties and seventies were very anti romance novel, but i'm not so sure I agree with their arguments.
