Joyce's Leopold Bloom
Man's light motif linked thinking, feeling and behaviours in the novel to deep, conscious motivations. In ulysses, we get an incredibly human odysseus in leopold bloom. Bloom is filled with unfulfilled desires and a few powerful regrets. We see joyce working at a kind of modernistic alchemy, the goal of which is the unification of spirit with matter. Thomas mann is working just as alchemically. The aspect of what one might describe as a synchronistic influence between man and joyce fascinates professor campbell.
