The Mariel Boatlift and Cuban American History
The first Cuban refugees to arrive in the U.S. after the revolution were by and large members of the professional class. Estimates say that about a third of the people in the boatlift were Afro-Cuban, dark-skinned. In the early 60s, Cuban Americans very quickly were able to kind of lean into whiteness in a city coming out of the legacy of Jim Crow.
