The Cost of St Edward's Crown

The coronation of King Charles III will take place on 6 May at Westminster Abbey. St Edward's Crown is the centrepiece object and dates back to 1660s. The medieval crown jewels were melted down and sold off in 1649 after execution of Charles I during our revolution. When monarchy was restored 10 years later, the jewel house had to be completely remade with a new crown named after Edward the Confessor - whose medieval crown had been melted down a decade before.
