The book does not have a lot of interiority at all anyway. The closest you get to like how a character feels about a situation is if he gives you an adjective or two for whatever like action they're performing in the narration. And I mean, that, that seems like a thing where Crooks is like uniquely influenced less in this society. He has found somebody he can exert some small amount of control over, even if it's just emotional control.
