Sir Flinders Petrie and the Pyramids of Giza

Sir Flinders Petrie is a very important name in the history of Egyptology. He was working at a middle kingdom pyramid site called Lahun when he found the remains of a labourers encampment. This suggests that individuals were brought in to live and work at the complex itself maybe even held captive. A hundred years after Petrie's discovery the grave pit of a labourer was discovered at Giza. The labourer had been laid to rest with offerings of bread and beer. Graffiti on the blocks used to build the pyramids demonstrates a team ethic among the labourers which demonstrates that there was literacy among the workers.
