The Functions of the Mucosa in the Smallintestine

The main functions of the mucosa are to help us absorb and transport those nutrients. In our small intestine, it is not just like a straight flat layer of cells. We have tight junction proteins which are just molecules that form little, like you can think of, kind of like cement, sealing these cells together. And then they also create some different microbial peptides that kind of prevent pathogens from taking up. So this is really all of these together is how our gut is seals itself. But when some of those functions fail or are not fully sealed is when the idea of leaky gut comes into play.
