The Last Straw
In order to reach land, we had to fly faster than any balloon had ever flown before. That meant staying right in the center of the jet stream, a space just 100 yards wide. The final straw was when we lost radio contact. We dropped down to 30,000 feet and flew an hour after hour at over 200 miles an hour in a lopsided capsule.
