Tolkien, Language Is Essential to Mankind
Tolkien says that language is essential to man. Tolkien was a philologist, so his view matches up with the modernist idea of cutting out all this extra fluff type stuff. We're not Turing machines but we can speak richly about life and that is essential to who we are. I would love to say that for Tolkien, it's because God is a communicative being. But Tolkien doesn't go that far.
