There is the possibility that we're really here seeing a wide social spread. It could of course be the rather up market owner of the pottery who was also kind of wasting his time when he saw some pots being out to dry and decided he would mark them with his own bit of Virgil. Mary do you think there's any way that it could have been a sort of deliberate ornamentation so it was sold as a decorative item? I mean I don't think that's right but one thing that people have started to wonder about is whether this was a kind of up market advert.
