Frederick Douglass' Escape From Baltimore to New York City
Douglass escaped by train from Baltimore to New York City on September 3, 1838. He got someone's free papers and pretended he was that person to be able to get on the train. From there, he became dedicated to helping other fugitive slaves gain their freedom. In effect, he helped to run the federal court that once adjudicated fugitive slave cases.
