The Athenians' Disappointment With the City People
As the Athenian farmers abandoned their land in the Attica countryside, they took with them their families and what few household goods. Some even went as far as the Pyreus into the territory between the long walls that linked Athens to Pyreus. Most had to seek out empty space in the city, or bunk down in temples and shrines which no doubt scandalized the pious.
