Lumumba was the country's first democratically elected president. He won on a promise of keeping the country's resources for its own benefit. Belgium annexed the mining provinces 11 days after independence. Lumumba reached out to the United Nations for help saying, look, they just chopped off part of our country and we need that to survive. And within six months he had been killed,. chopped into pieces, dissolved in acid, bones grind down, except for one tooth taken as a souvenir.
