Tech is starting to get to that 1000 language frontier. But tech is still unavailable in thousands more languages, right? Including languages that linguists in academia are already working on. We basically got PhD students who are sitting there spending years of their lives manually transcribing all these recordings so they can find those bits of language and study them further. It makes it quite difficult for a community where people say, hey, I would love to hear all the recordings where people talk about this Creek because it's... historical significance.
