The Rise and Fall of Captain John C. Fremont
In 1846, the non-native population of the Mexican territory all to California numbered roughly 15,000 people. Most were Californios, people of Mexican or Spanish descent living in the territory. Of these non-native residents, only about 800 were US settlers. Using only these 800 Americans, Captain Fremont aimed to incite a revolution. The U.S. hoped to inspire California's residents to follow Texas's example and clamor for annexation by the United States.
