The Importance of Privacy in a Society
The main character Winston Smith is living a script that's already been written by his primary antagonist of Ryan. He starts breaking the rules immediately right with the diary. In this society any sort of privacy is verbotan so just to have a diary and to be writing in it which he can do only because there's a place in the department outside of these things called telescreens who are omnipresent and monitor people. But the thing to keep in mind is that it'll turn out by the end of this book that all of this is sort of preordained for him.
