Goughman spent nine months in a psychiatric hospital. He did an ethnography of the ward and he very much did the ethnography, he says. His concerns were whether or not institutional forms would constrain personal freedoms. It's going to be very, very difficult for people to constitute themselves through social interaction because of constraints on everyday life.
