Both overall do more to develop the world, probably largely because Martin had developed the world more as he wrote these. Another thing that happens here that George seems to do a lot is characters that are presented as a villainous at first, but by the end, maybe they're a hero. It's exploring that concept of what it means to swear your service to somebody and what that implies.
