The way you get rid of the spoiler problem is by instituting rank choice voting. You go into the booth on general election day, you see your five choices that came out of the top five primary and you rank them. And if one candidate has over fifty per cent, that's fine. The election's over. That candidate wins. But if none of the five candidates has gotten support from a majority of voters, then the candidate who came in last place is automatically eliminated from the race.
