The Role of Race in the Academy
In the US, this was less overt. It was more about wealth and status and where you came from. Rich black students, for example, performed versions of whiteness to fit in within the elite space but they themselves saw it as part of their own interests. So race, we argue, was only understood through the lens of class. They recognized that the fact that attending these universities were significant brands.
