During World War II, U.S. cities like Boston and New York were so bright they were basically like spotlights shining on American ships at sea. This was creating all sorts of problems for America's war effort. The Rural Electrification Act brought electrical lighting to all the darkest nooks and crannies of the American countryside. Light was an unstoppable juggernaut, a mainstay of American society.
