In the summer of 2026, the trial of Lindsay Clancy in the United States brought this condition back into the spotlight: postpartum psychosis. The former nurse is accused of killing her three children, aged five, three and eight months, in January 2023, before attempting to take her own life. She survived but was left paraplegic.
Her defence lawyers argue that she was not criminally responsible for her actions because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis, alongside depression, insomnia and auditory hallucinations urging her to harm herself and her children.
But what exactly is postpartum psychosis? So, what causes it, and could it happen to anyone? How is it treated? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!
