Starting in the 1930s and continuing in subsequent decades, the government poured hundreds of millions of dollars into building a series of dams. So thinking about those billions of dollars spent to make water available for farming, how much have the US government and the taxpayers subsidised farming in the southwest? Oh gosh, if I just said every way imaginable, would that be? Yep, basically this is all a gigantic, ongoing taxpayer handout to farmers in the southwest - something to bear in mind as we get into the nitty gritty here.
