The Sea Change in the China Studies Community in the US
There are a lot of contemporary parallels, but the one that stuck out to me was this whole arc of the West's souring on China. So just over the past three years, this view among Chinese experts in the US has really shifted in sort of the same ways. They see their job as being to hold China up and educate the public about how to respect it properly. That when things start to go south, they can become very vicious critics.
