Isn't There a Radio Breakdown?
Canadian army's whole doctrine is predicated on massive fire support, as james quite rightly points out. The intelligence sergeant of the north nova scotia highlanders said,. many years later, that the germans are actually jamming the radio frequencies. There are also problems with too many radios operating on the same frequency on that day. So belfast may well be firing, but she's not firing in support of the advance of ninth brigade. But there's probably a huge amount of german artillery firing. I counted it's probably 80 field pieces or more blasting nine brigades.
