The Origins of the Dissolution of Monasteries
In 1536 the first monasteries to be dissolved are the smaller ones, aren't they? That suggests a theological motivation. The idea of dissolution in itself, it was in the air but it didn't have to become the thing that it became. And actually the Preamble to the Suppression Act 1536 goes out of its way to talk about how great the large houses are and how morally sound and spiritual they are. But I think passing the smaller houses didn't necessarily mean you wanted to suppress all houses. Whilst it seems like an inevitable stepping stone to last in hindsight, 1536, I don't think that was necessarily the inclusion of other people would have drawn.
