The Cost of Multitasking

multitasking ends up turning into task switching, which is what the problem is. It's kind of like going frame by frame between two things so that it looks like you're doing them at the same time, but really you're not. We assess our productivity to be higher than it actually is when we multitask. But even though multitasking may trick us into thinking that we are productive, much like sleep, it ends up just compromising our performance at the end of the day.
