It wasn't quite sure what it wanted to be. I didn't mind being not that well paid in exchange for having the most brilliant time of my life. The editor, him, Sal Steve Platt, was almost a donkey jacket wearing tie-bashing - although a very courteous colleague. John Pilger was the most famous writer on the first Gulf War at the time. But I think I was already pulling in another direction and identifying with new labor. It did have that sort of atmosphere of trust you to get on with the job.
