We lived for a long time in a malthusian trap, really, up until the 17 fifties. The industrial revolution kicked off when coal mining became more intensive and then on comes oil. A lot of the rise of productivity that's been recorded over centuries has often been unexplained in models. But outside of the market contract, there are all sorts of negative impacts that haven't been taken to account. And this is why the work of the earth system scientists on planetary boundaries is so paratime changing. When we go over that we risk tipping the earth system into a completely different state.
