The Respect for a Marriage Act Is a Big Deal
Congress passed the defensive marriage act in 96. It made sure gay people who got married would not enjoy the benefits of a legal union, at least not at the federal level. Because there are more than a thousand rights and privileges under federal law that are afforded to couples who are married. A just by dint of having a marriage license, you get all kinds of benefits on taxes, is when you have children, the list goes on.
