What Is the Essence of the Chinese Party?
In china, we would have to talk about the centrality of the party and its relationship to the institutions of government. In my view, that is the beating heart of the current chinese system. I think what's happened, and what's become even clearer under sigan ping, is that you have a leninist party which is now pursuing what are really nationalist goals. As tey said, for a time it was connected to marxism, so the marxism lentanism and aimed to bring about communism. And that's still the way the chinese communist party talks about itself and what it's doing.
