The South used to be called the solid South, meaning the solid Democratic South. But that's because the Democratic Party allowed them to be horrible racists. That's the most massive trade off I know of in American politics. When they signed the Civil Rights Bill, Johnson said, well, we've lost the South for a generation. And yeah, and then the South became pretty much the Republican South.
