The Dark Side of Humanity
I think that we read mysteries to see ourselves in them too. It gives us a place to actually look at our dark side, our low anthropology and see our masses of failures. Even the people who are ultimately exonerated of the murder are still found guilty of some other kind of moral or actual crime. And even though they're not unmasked as the murderer at the end, something is unmasked or some indiscretion has been committed. So there's something about that kind of universal accusation that I don't know is like, I think maybe because especially American culture is so optimistic and optimizing.
