The average scores 3.08 strokes to hold out on the PGA2 or from 180 yards, according to Mark Brody's book "Every Shot Counts" The right half of your shot pattern should be anywhere from putting from 30 to 50 feet all the way up to chipping across the green from the right side. And then you're just accumulating all these little tenths of a stroke, hundreds of a stroke sometimes. But when you do that for 18 straight holes, it adds up to, wow, I just gained a stroke of my competition and I didn't really do anything necessarily that special aside from the patient and simply plot along.
