Adolescence is an invention of the 20th century. Teenagers didn't exist until G. Stanley Hall decided that, oh, we have to teach them the special way codes of their biological changes. Up until compulsory schools started to take hold in the mid 19th century, children were part of everyday life. Now I live near a school and I don't see kids here. Everyone is being shuttled around after school stuff and enrichment classes. That's like become their whole life. And the idea that a child could leave their house, walk down the street, play in a playground and come back on their own isn't realistic anymore.
