It is very uncommon for the antibody screen to be negative in a warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia. A lot of times we'll see patients with sickle cell disease or the thalassemia developing antibodies. And it can make the process of finding a compatible unit of blood pretty tricky. That's where the cross match comes in.
