In the early 1900s, train passengers would come to new york from all over the country through new jersey. They would have to disembark, get off the train and climb aboard a ferry to float over in order to just arrive in the city. That made the west side of the hudson river kind of a big mess. But by 19 hundred, you have bridges opened, or are opening, like the brooklyn bridge.
