The Cicada's Life Cycle
Roxanne Jones: I wanted to ask you a little bit about the cicadas. They come up in two of your poems. The first one is for the doctor's record. And then you have this moment where you say, I remain astonished by how cicadas live for 17 years underground and then die within weeks of coming up to meet the world. That's a moment of I think reverence and astonishment; there's a lot of poetry in just the cicada life.Jones: In Above Ground, I'm with my children who are then I think four and two. And we are looking at the cicadan shells that are strewn across our lawn.
