The Monument to the President
Four hundred workers worked all day long, regardless of the weather conditions, to carve the president's faces into that stone. For $8 a day, the workers climbed 700 stairs to get to the top of the rock. They would then drop down in front of the rocks, connected to steel cables, and begin either exploding the rock using dynamite or doing precision work. About 90% of the work, though, was done with dynamite,. So it was very dangerous. As for the Lakota Indians, well, they thought carving into sacred mountains was a no-no.
