The Importance of Stockpile Stewardship in Nuclear Fusion
The National Ignition Facility was built after the Cold War ended. Congress has deemed stockpiles stewardship critical for U.S. national security. The NIF cost three and a half billion dollars, and even for Uncle Sam, it was a gutsy call. Five years before his team could even fire four lasers at a piece of tin foil, Ed Moses said that he reckoned his team could achieve ignition more energy out than in 3 years.
